Professor Yahya E. Choonara (BPharm; MPharm;PhD) is Chair and Head of the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology at the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS), Johannesburg, South Africa (SA). He is a Professor of Pharmaceutics, Head of Pharmaceutics and Director of the Wits Advanced Drug Delivery Platform (WADDP) research unit and National Research Foundation (NRF) Chair in Pharmaceutical Biomaterials and Polymer-Engineered Drug Delivery Technologies. He features in Stanford University’s Top 2% of pharmaceutical scientists globally and holds a strong research position globally in targeted drug delivery, nanomedicines, regenerative medicine and functional biomaterials. For 21 years he has been at the forefront of producing targeted medicines to treat infectious, hereditary and lifestyle diseases and continues to make a major impact centred on intellectual property generation and translational research in the pharmaceutical sciences. He is an inventor of 12 patent families across infectious diseases, neurotrauma, oral peptide delivery, targeted cancer therapy and complex therapeutic devices for the most challenging illnesses. He has published >380 research articles in ISI-accredited journals, 42 book chapters, 10 editorials, editor of 2 books. His work is highly cited with more than 10500 citations (H-index >50) and with collaborative networks in more than 9 countries.\r\n
